OSCAR WILDE OBSERVES
We do not want a just God, regardless
of what we say in our prayers. We want a
harsh God to judge our enemies, and a merciful God to forgive our sins. Reconciling this, without becoming
polytheists, is the perpetual theological problem.
MARK TWAIN REMARKS
I shall not dare to comment on the
nature of the Deity. I shall simply hope
that the angel bookkeeper in charge of my accounts is rather careless, or can
be bribed with a cigar.
